Product Overview

Rogosa et al. developed LBS Agar as a selective medium for the isolation and enumeration of oral and fecal lactobacilli. They reported that the medium was more selective for lactobacilli than the tomato juice media previously employed and that the growth of molds, streptococci, and spreading organisms was markedly reduced.   • Magnesium Sulfate ....................... 0.575g
  • Manganese Sulfate .................... 0.12g
  • Agar ..................................................15.0g

Final pH: 5.5 ± 0.2 at 25.0°C

Preparation: Mix 84 grams of the dehydrated medium and 1.32ml of glacial acetic acid in one Liter of purified water until evenly dispersed. Heat with repeated stirring and boil for minute to dissolve completely, use without autoclaving. If storage is necessary autoclave at 118°C for 15 minutes.

Quality Control Specifications:

  1. The powder is homogeneous with soft lumps and beige.
  2. Visually the prepared medium is slightly opalescent and light amber.
  3. Expected cultural response after 24-48 hours at 35.0°C.

Storage: Store the sealed bottle containing the dehydrated medium at 2 to 8.0°C. Once opened and recapped, place the container in a low humidity environment at the same storage temperature. Protect it from moisture and light. The dehydrated medium should be discarded if it is not free flowing or if the color has changed from the original beige color.
